Rescue: accelerated patient recruitment
Case study
In-Home services.
Challenge
A biotechnology company was attempting to recruit 40 paediatric patients in a US phase II oncology study. The study required three one-hour infusions each week as well as PK blood draws and safety labs. There were recruitment challenges due to the limited patient population and the high burden of the study regimen. After 6 months of the enrolment period, less than half of the recruitment goal had been met.
Solution
At the 6 month point, Accellacare In-Home Services (formerly Symphony Clinical Research) rescue services were introduced for PK draws and safety labs at selected visits and time points, including weekend and evening visits, making the study more convenient for patients. In-Home Services were in place within 3 weeks.
Outcome
6 months after adding in-home clinical trial visits enrolment had tripled, exceeding the goal and cutting the anticipated enrolment period from 18 months to 12 months. More than 40% of patients opted-in for In-Home Services. 7 of the 10 study sites were able to enrol patients from out of state.
